I had the pleasure of driving to Buckinghamshire and then to Windsor a few days later. Apart from most of the petrol stations being closed the post lockdown traffic was back to normal; huge queues and tailbacks.
I did notice that not many trucks were on the roads. On one occasion, I was behind one very careful driver in a small city car approaching a roundabout on a double carriageway. A LGV was on the inside. As the government has relaxed the rules for the training of LGV drivers I was not troubled at all as the car driver stopped and let the LGV driver negotiate the roundabout and therefore avoiding the risk of being side swiped. Good move.
On the way back late at night on the M25 the variable speed limits were on due to ‘workers on the road’. The variable speed limits were also on when travelling to and from Windsor. Good for areas of congestion, dangerous for free-flowing traffic.
It has been reported that the variable signs are not switched off as a significant percentage of the safety cameras do not work. This would explain why the variable speed limits remain for no good reason. This could be safety risk to the public. It also means that the chances of being killed if a car uses the hard shoulder or breaks down (due to lack of fuel?). It very much reduces the chance of the emergency services being sent out to assist drivers in need. Does this sound familiar in modern Britain with the police being described as ‘largely irrelevant’ and ambulances often taking more than four hours to arrive after a call.
A government is described as being responsible for deciding how the country is run and for managing things, day to day? At least turkeys may breathe a sigh of relief this December?
