From Good to Great: Why Line Manager Training is Essential

Training line managers is a critical activity and should be recognised as part of the company overall strategy.  Training equips these vital employees with the skills to effectively lead teams and steer them in line with the overall business goals.  The content of each training session can be tailored around the needs and experience of the management team, to incorporate employment processes e.g. handling a grievance, managing performance, conducting a disciplinary.

Line manager training can incorporate skills requirements, including:

  • Effective communication – to improve communication skills, adapting to individual needs,
  • Conflict resolution – awareness of conflict and preventing this escalating into a dispute,
  • Performance management – setting expectations, tracking process and providing feedback/guidance, to ensure employees are aligned to the objectives (individual / business), increasing productivity
  • Motivation and engagement – recognise achievements, create an engaging work environment for improved work satisfaction,
  • Delegation and empowerment – to effectively delegate tasks (an important skill for managers learn), enabling employees to own processes and have a sense of responsibility,
  • Resource planning / workforce planning – working with HR to implement resource plans; to meet the company goals, understand current skills and capabilities- identify gaps, plan for successors.
