Government Set to Abandon Plans for Right to ‘Switch Off’ Outside Work Hours

Recent reports suggest that the Government is set to abandon plans for a right to ‘switch off’ outside working hours.

The proposal was a crucial element of Kier Starmer’s ‘New Deal for Working People’ and sought to strengthen employment rights by allowing workers to ignore work-related emails, calls and chats outside contractual working hours.

The proposal was not included in the Employment Rights Bill but was expected to be incorporated as amendments were made to the Bill. Reports now suggest that this is unlikely to happen, although we await confirmation when the bill has its third reading on 11 and 12 March 2025.
