Recent statistics reveal that approximately 2.4 million veterans and 30,000 reservists are currently living in the UK.

Supporting veteran employees in the workplace is not only a matter of recognising their service, but also of creating an environment where they can thrive and apply their unique talents. By implementing thoughtful and practical initiatives, employers can make a lasting impact on the professional and personal lives of veteran employees. Here are some effective ways to do so:

  • Establish a Veteran-friendly environment: Encourage an inclusive and diverse culture. This includes acknowledging the distinct viewpoints and experiences of veteran personnel.
  •  Make resources available: Offer mental health support, such as through employee assistance programs or support groups, to help ease their transition to civilian life
  • Flexible work arrangements: Recognise that some veterans may have unique needs or face specific challenges, and offering flexible work schedules can be a valuable way to support them. Adaptability is essential, especially as some veterans may also serve as reservists. In such cases, having a policy that accommodates time off for reservists is crucial.
  • Training and growth: Offer veterans training programs that improve their career growth by assisting them in converting their military talents into civilian work skills.
  • Mentorship programmes: Put in place mentorship programs that pair seasoned workers with mentors.
  • Education and awareness: Hold training sessions or workshops to inform all staff members about the particular difficulties that Veterans may encounter, encouraging empathy and support.
  • Celebrate veterans: To express gratitude for their service, observe Veterans Day, Armed Forces Day, and Remembrance Day.
