The Fertility Workplace Pledge has been launched by Nickie Aiken MP to give individuals and couples undergoing fertility treatment statutory time off work. The pledge has already been signed by several large UK employers including Co-op, NatWest Group, Metro Bank, Channel 4, Zurich Insurance and UK Hospitality.
Undergoing fertility treatment whilst juggling a career is difficult and emotionally draining and many people feel they cannot tell their employer for fear of being overlooked for promotion or losing their job. Having appropriate support and policies in place can help tackle the stigma around fertility issues in the workplace.
Employers that sign the pledge commit to taking the following steps:
- Have accessible information including a workplace fertility policy to create an open culture free from stigma and ensure employees feel comfortable in the workplace.
- Raise awareness in the workplace through establishing the role of a Fertility Ambassador who can begin internal conversations and promote available support.
- Ensure line managers are trained so that they understand the realities of treatment and can support employees through the physical, mental and financial impacts.
- Provide staff with the right to request flexible working, including reasonable working adjustments, so they can attend appointments.
