Many Spanish citizens applied for British nationality when they moved to the UK many years ago. At the time it was not possible to keep their Spanish nationality and they had to renounce their Spanish nationality in order to acquire British nationality. They normally signed a naturalisation certificate.
Many Spanish women who married British citizens in the UK also applied for British nationality through the naturalisation certificate and renounced their Spanish nationality as well.
However, it is now possible for those Spanish citizens who renounced their Spanish nationality many years ago to recover their Spanish nationality.
The application to recover Spanish nationality must be done in person through the Spanish Consulate in London. The following documents must be taken to the Spanish Consulate:
- English naturalisation certificate and its official translation into Spanish
- A letter from the relevant council to confirm the address for the last two years in the UK and its official translation into Spanish
- If the applicant is a woman who married a British citizen, the English marriage certificate and its official translation into Spanish.
A lot of people wish to recover their Spanish nationality so that they can have a Spanish passport and then apply for Spanish nationality for their children (while keeping their British nationality).
The application for Spanish passports for the children must also be done in person through the Spanish Consulate. The following documents must be taken to the Spanish Consulate:
- Spanish birth certificate of the Spanish parent
- Apostilled English marriage certificate of the parents and its official translation into Spanish
- Apostilled English birth certificates of the children and their official translations into Spanish
In any case, the applicant must always check the documents needed with the Spanish Consulate.
