This week (15– 21 November 2021) is Road Safety Week 2021 organised by Brake who is the UK’s leading road safety charity.

The theme for this year’s Road Safety Week is Road Safety Heroes, recognising and celebrating all the professionals who help make our roads safer starting with those who design, build and maintain the roads to those who help out after an accident. Of course emergency services and medical professionals are crucial in this aspect but in the long-term we also instruct and work with rehabilitation and treatment professionals who are invaluable after a road traffic accident. These experts and clinicians can deal with the whole range of physical, psychological and neurological injuries in the case of a brain injury that can be caused by a road traffic accident; physiotherapy, occupational therapy, case management, speech and language therapy, neurorehabilitation, neuropsychology etc.

I differentiate between experts and clinicians because in a personal injury claim, these are separate; we instruct experts to help demonstrate exactly how a person has been impacted by their accident. These experts are crucial to ensure we can help our clients can be compensated for each and every loss they have incurred or will incur in the future. We also instruct clinicians to work directly with the injured person to provide necessary care and treatment as soon after the accident as possible. It is well known that starting the rehabilitation process improves chances of better recovery and therefore getting treating clinicians involved early will get our clients ‘on their feet’ as quickly as possible and as close to their pre-accident life wherever possible. Not only does this early treatment and care help someone recover following an accident, but it also helps prove what treatment and care is needed long-term to continue or at least maintain that person’s recovery. Generally, in the case of serious and catastrophic road traffic accidents, an injured person will need treating clinicians of various disciplines to maximise their recovery prospects and give them the best quality of life available.

The other key group of heroes following a road traffic accident is the injured person’s family. When someone is catastrophically injured, their loved ones go through almost as much trauma and difficulty and yet they can be the most crucial group of people to provide support and encouragement when trying to recover. Working closely with the family is critical to ensure that the family are supported in providing that support to an injured person.

As a highly experienced team in catastrophic injuries, Nockolds works with many experts and clinicians to give our clients the best chance of getting their lives back to as close to ‘normal’ as possible. We also recognise the value and importance of working just as closely with families as well.
