Starmer to Bar Grenfell ‘Named and Shamed’ Firms From Future Public Sector Work

By Charlotte Barker

Head of Construction

Following the Grenfell Inquiry Report (and backing one of the key demands of the Survivor’s Group Grenfell United), Keir Starmer has announced that companies named and shamed will not be handed government work in the future. This decision comes in response to the catastrophic fire in 2017, which claimed 72 lives and highlighted serious safety failings in building regulations and fire safety practices.

Responding to the report, the Prime Minister will write to these companies and put them on notice that they will be barred from taxpayer-funded contracts.

Starmer plans to reform the construction products industry that made this fatal cladding so homes are made of safe materials and those who compromise that safety will face the consequences and set out steps to speed up remediation work on buildings deemed unsafe.

The move aims to hold those responsible for the disaster accountable and ensure that public funds are not awarded to firms that have demonstrated a disregard for safety standards.
