The Highway Code is the motoring bible. No doubt it will be on your bedside table (if you suffer with insomnia and are bored of counting sheep). However drivers are expected to know about any changes. You are judged by these standards. As the old saying in English (and Welsh) adage states ‘ignorance is no defence’.
So what is expected in 2022? Two changes that you need to be aware of once the new guidance is brought in (supposedly early January but it keeps on being pushed back) are worth highlighting. The first relates to vulnerable road users. We often think of road users as being drivers. However pedestrians, cyclists and animals (horses being ridden) are road users. The government is wanting to put them in at the top of the list to remind drivers that this group are being flesh and bone. So have a look at what is required of us. It is common sense but the police (who?) will be watching drivers and will want to launch a prosecution to remind us. The second relates to (yawn) using mobile phones. ‘Use’ will now be widened to touching your mobile phone. So don’t be tempted to change your children’s playlist at the traffic lights. Your ears will just have to bleed (and you may educate yourself).
